We provide a wide range of activities for young people both in our museums and galleries and in youth clubs or other community venues as part of our community programmes. All these activities are free.

In our museums and galleries

We run monthly workshops aimed at young people aged between 12 and 16 years old in our museums and galleries. Previous workshops have included graffiti art, capoeira Brazilian dance and comic book writing.

The workshops are drop-in and no prior booking is required. For further information visit the What's On listings. Other events in the listings will also appeal to young people coming as individuals or in small groups.

In the community

National Museums Liverpool’s outreach officer for young people works not only in the museums and galleries but also in youth clubs and community centres. She also works with young people who may be socially excluded.

The Youth Arts Programme

Our Youth Arts Programme provides opportunities for young people across Merseyside to engage in innovative and creative arts activities within our museums and galleries.

We work in partnership with local community groups and arts organisations to enable young people explore their artistic talent and showcase their own culture and views. The programme helps young people develop their personal, social and creative skills. Our collections provide the inspiration and stimulus to explore a diverse range of issues through the expressive arts. Sessions are also designed to complement our fantastic temporary exhibitions.

Youth Arts enables young people to have a voice and responds to the needs of local young people and community groups, reflecting their ideas and opinions towards the Capital of Culture year 2008 and beyond.

The Youth Arts Programme is funded by the Rank Foundation.

National Museums Liverpool Youth Theatre

In autumn 2006 National Museums Liverpool launched its Youth Theatre from the Treasure House Theatre in World Museum Liverpool. The Youth Theatre creates high quality art and theatre using the museums and galleries to stimulate new work.

Our Youth Theatre is a vibrant, lively and creative place which encourages young people to develop their practical skills and knowledge of theatre and the arts and to nurture and expand their own creativity. It encourages confidence, self-awareness, teamwork, communication skills and a wide range of performance skills including acting, improvisation, devising, movement and music. It aims to create exciting, dynamic work which reflects the ideas and experiences of its members. Above all, National Museum Liverpool Youth Theatre is FUN!

Groups are made up of 11-15 and 16-21 years, both meeting on Saturday mornings at World Museum Liverpool.

Youth Advisory Group – ‘empowered to advise’

National Museum Liverpool’s Youth Advisory Group consists of young people meeting regularly to have their say on what happens for their age group in its museums and galleries. It is a fun but productive group where young people play an active role in making sure that our museums are fun and interesting places

The group helps to plan arts activities for young people and make sure that they are being offered opportunities that are exciting, interesting and most importantly of all, what they want to do.

As well as having a direct impact on activities offered for young people, the group will have opportunities to get involved in many other aspects of our work, including exhibition planning and consultation for capital projects. There will be opportunities to go behind the scenes and to get involved with other projects and activities, depending on members’ particular interests, as well as special events, activities and trips planned especially for the group.

If you are interested in joining the Youth Advisory Group please click below to download a contact sheet, fill it in and return it by e-mail or by post to Michelle O'Callaghan, Learning, World Museum Liverpool, William Brown Street, L3 8EN.

For further information about any of the projects in the Youth Arts Programme please contact Michelle O’Callaghan by telephone on 0151 478 4338 or send Michelle O'Callaghan an email.
