Sheet No. 65 : Liverpool Pilots

A history of the Liverpool Pilot Service. The service was established with the Liverpool Pilotage Act of 1766, which required a pilot on all vessels in the Mersey, and continues today. The sheet charts the transfer of the service to Mersey Docks and Harbour Board (MDHB) in 1858, the opening of the pilotage office, the move from large pilot vessels to fast launches, and on to the present day.

The sheet lists the relevant archive records which include MDHB Liverpool Pilotage Committee records (minutes, character books, certificates etc) and records of the Edmund Gardner Liverpool pilot boat (log books, bridge records, staff records, photographs etc).

The sheet also features a Liverpool pilot service reading list as well as a more general piloting list.
