Certificate of Competency in cooking

The Merchant Shipping Act of 1906 required the registration of cooks, which began in 1908. Registers of Cooks Certificates of Competence and Service, 1915-1918, are held at the National Maritime Museum.

This Certificate of Competency in Cooking was issued to Ralph Jones in 1920 .

This is to certify that the above named, having passed through a course of training, has been examined at City of Liverpool Seamen's Cookery School, an institution approved for the purpose by the Board of Trade, and, on proof of one month's service at sea, is qualified to act as Ship's Cook. Dated this 11th day of March 1920.
