John Masefield, Poet Laureate from 1930 to 1967, was best known to many as a 'poet of the sea'. This connection to the sea began in Liverpool in 1891, when as a 13 year old boy Masefield was enrolled on the training ship HMS Conway, moored in the Mersey.
