This image is from an album of photographs that belonged to Mr Howie, a shipping agent for Elder Dempster in West Africa. The images in the album provide evidence of the cultural interactions of the period.

Elder Dempster and Company, established in 1868, were the Liverpool agents of the British and African Steam Navigation Company of Glasgow.
