Many members of the Merchant Navy were never required to wear a uniform. However on many vessels, especially those owned by large shipping companies or which carried passengers, complex systems of stripes and badges were used. These helped to identify crew from passengers, officers from seamen, as well as encouraging discipline and creating a corporate identity.
Uniforms displayed rank and were a source of pride for their wearers. Onboard liners, uniforms allowed passengers to distinguish between crew ranks and quickly became an expected part of the liner transport experience.
