The Mersey Docks and Harbour Board (MDHB) had their own uniforms for those members of staff who needed to be identified, especially those closely connected with the water, for example, the lighthouse keepers, dock gatemen, crew of MDHB vessels etc. The clerks, stevedores, dock labourers and dock board shared the common unofficial uniform of the day where status and occupation were marked by choice of clothes and hats.
