Liverpool’s position by the sea gives the city and its people a connection with the rest of the world. The items included in this small former display were selected from the Maritime Archives and Library to show how cultural influences from around the world have come to Liverpool because of the sea.

Seafarers travel the world and did so long before the age of mass tourism. Liverpool is a merchant navy port, based on trade and commerce. Business pursuits sent people from Liverpool around the world, where they were exposed to cultures and environments different to those at home.

People from many different cultures also travelled to Liverpool. Some were emigrants passing through, but many foreign seafarers settled in Liverpool and added elements of their culture to the life of the city.
