Here the keel of Mauretania II is being laid at the Cammell Laird shipyard; their third ship for the Cunard Line (then Cunard-White Star Ltd). Mauretania II was designed to relieve Queen Mary I if necessary and was the largest liner to be constructed in England at that time. When this photograph was taken Cammell Laird was an internationally important name in ship construction.
