This section features paintings created during the first stage of Liverpool's development into a major international port. It includes images of a privateer (a privately owned vessel authorised to attack and capture enemy ships) and the only known painting of a Liverpool whaling ship.

A fully illustrated catalogue of marine paintings in the Merseyside Maritime Museum is available. Written by Anthony Tibbles, curator of maritime history, it provides an excellent overview of the collection. Copies are available from the museum shop or by mail order.
