Oil on canvas

Robert Salmon was born in Whitehaven but spent most of his career between Liverpool, Greenock and Boston, USA. He was a very successful artist and influenced many contemporary painters.
The painting was commissioned by Hugh Owen, Captain of 'St Lucia' from 1821 to 1823. This is a very fine example of Salmon's work and has a very detailed view of Liverpool. It was presented to the museum by one of his descendants.
'St Lucia' was built in Liverpool in 1818 for the Caribbean trade in sugar and other tropical goods.
