'Liverpool privateer returning with a prize' by Joseph Parry (1744-1826)

Oil on canvas, 62 x 99cm

This painting shows a privateer returning to the Mersey with a captured French merchant vessel. The privateer is the smaller ship on the left. She has a serpent figurehead and is probably the brig 'Viper', which captured a number of French ships in the period 1778-82.

This is the earliest known Liverpool `ship painting' and is dated 1781.
