'Jumna and other Brocklebank vessels' by Joseph Heard

Oil on canvas, 76 x 110cm

This unusual group portrait features six vessels of the famous Brocklebank Line. They are shown off the Cumbrian port of Whitehaven.

At first sight the only common feature of these vessels is their owner. However, recent research has shown that Joseph Pinder, the Brocklebank Line's Marine Superintendent from 1836 to 1850, served on all of them. He was apprenticed on 'Hercules' (far right) and captained all the others. The painting thus represents his sea-going career.
