Oil on canvas, 50 x 76cm

'The Duke' is shown off the North Wales coast with the headland of the Great Orme in the distance. She is flying a Stars and Stripes flag which may indicate that she is ready to put a pilot on board an American vessel. In fact there is a paddle steamer of the American Collins Line in the far distance.
'The Duke' was built in Liverpool in 1852. She remained in the pilot service until 1894 when she was sold to Danish owners as a fishing boat.
