Oil on canvas, 84 x 139cm

This busy scene off the entrance to Whitehaven harbour shows a variety of shipping. It includes three vessels owned by Younghusband and Co. who were based in the town. The picture was painted for JF Younghusband and was completed before December 1840 when a print taken from the painting was published.
This is not a normal ship portrait: the vessels are not shown in full profile and are made part of the overall scene. It is one of Walters' most interesting and adventurous canvases and may be an attempt at a less rigid form of portraiture.
