'Reliance' by William H Yorke (1847-1921)

Oil on canvas, 62.5 x 95cm

'Reliance' was built in Liverpool in 1884. She spent most of her career voyaging up and down the Pacific coast of America and across to Australia carrying coal, nitrate and timber. Large sailing vessels like 'Reliance' were able to compete with steamers on long-distance voyages.

William Howard Yorke was born in Canada but he came to Liverpool as a child about 1855 and remained in the port for the rest of his life. His father, William G Yorke, was also a painter and their work has often been confused.
