'The Liverpool Landing Stage', 1893 by WF Preston (active 1885-1895)

Oil on canvas, 77 x 127.5cm

View across river, as described in the text

This evening view shows the Pier Head waterfront with the ferry about to leave for Woodside. The landing stage, with its covered walkways and bridges was the largest floating structure in the world when it was built in 1876. It was designed to float so that ferries and other passenger ships could berth at any state of the tide. Alongside St Nicholas Church are Tower Buildings (replaced 1911) and the Public Baths (demolished 1907).
