'Prospect of Liverpool', unknown artist

Oil on canvas

View across river, as described in the text

This imaginary aerial view shows how much the town has grown since 1680. The main feature is the town's first dock opened in 1715, which can be seen on the right. The large brick building at the head of the dock is the Custom House completed in 1722. Further back into the town a large flag is flying over the Town Hall and the Exchange. At the far end of the town is St Nicholas, the parish church. In the river a group of vessels is firing a salute, a common practice at this period.

This painting is currently on display in the International Slavery Museum, on the third floor of the Merseyside Maritime Museum building.
