Walter George Hiscock joined HMS Conway in September 1909, completing his training in December 1911. He was recommended for appointment of a RNR (Royal Naval Reserves) Midshipman, an honour awarded to the best cadets of each year. After a two year apprenticeship, George took up his position as Midshipman RNR to the armed merchant cruiser HMS Macedonia, on the outbreak of the First World War. His sea-going career lasted throughout the war, serving also on HMS Otranto.
