About this object

British War Medal, 1914-18, awarded posthumously to John Henry Lowrie Hayes, Junior 5th Engineer on board Lusitania. John was born in Liverpool in 1884. He was Junior 5th Engineer on board Lusitania when he married Jeanetta Purves in August 1914. He perished in the sinking.
Their daughter Jeanette was born on 27 May 1915 and Cunard paid for her schooling. Jeanetta was one of the last surviving Lusitania crew widows to draw a pension from Cunard. She died in 1984, aged 89.
John’s body was never recovered. He is commemorated on the Mercantile Marine War Memorial at Tower Hill, London and the municipal war memorial in Stanley Road, Bootle.
