British First World War propaganda poster depicting a German U-boat sinking a British merchant ship.“Freedom of the seas” is a principle of the laws at sea. The US demanded that Germany respect such international agreements which protected neutral ships from seizure or sinking. Germany’s ongoing contravention of this was key to the US Declaration of War in 1917.
