Saccharometer

From 1806 saccharometers were used by Excise Officers to determine the gravity of various liquids. It measured:

  • brewers' wort, a liquid obtained by dissolving sugar or molasses in water
  • wash, distillers' wort in which fermentation has begun
  • glucose solution.

The box was made by Dring and Fage. The saccharometer was made by Oertling Ltd. It was used during the 1960s.
