SS Halizones ship model

This model of the SS Halizones was used as a visual aid at the Waterguard Training Centre (for Customs Officers) at Gravesend until 1972. Later it was taken to the Training Centre at London and Southend. The vessel's name was used during the many training exercises completed by the Assistant Preventive Officer students. It was a good way of familiarising students with the parts of ships in order to prepare them to carry out their jobs efficiently and effectively.

The actual SS Halizones was built in 1920 for the British and American SN Co and RP Houston and Co. It was used to transport cargo between the UK and the continent and later South Africa. In July 1943 it was travelling in a large convoy between Glasgow and Buenos Aires that was attacked by German Condor seaplanes. On 27 July the Halizones was bombed and sank three days later just off the Portuguese coast.
