About this object

Leader was pilot boat No.2 in Liverpool from 1856-1897. In 1881 Leader famously led a fleet of ships into the port during a heavy storm.

This ship-in-bottle was made by Des Newton in 1988, whilst demonstrating the art of ship-bottling at the museum. the model is inside a dimple-shaped whisky bottle.

Leader was sold to the Preston Pilotage Service in 1897, based on the River Ribble. Today the main mast is used as a flagpole at a bowling green near Preston docks.
