Aintree

PLACENAME: Ayntre (first mentioned 1220). Single tree, possibly used as a meeting point. From Old Norse 'einn' and 'tré'.

Aintree Racecourse is now a modern horse racing venue, but the first meeting of the Grand National was in 1839. The race was initiated by William Lynn (1794-1872), proprietor of the Waterloo Hotel and founder of the Waterloo Cup.
