Barnston

PLACENAME: Bernestone (first mentioned 1086 in the Domesday Book). Beornwulf's farmstead. Personal name Beornwulf and 'tūn'. Beruleston 1199; Borneston c1250.

Barnston Towers (1852 remodelling of an earlier building) is a circular brick castellated structure associated with a house and stables. Two were originally constructed and one has been demolished.

Early evidence of human activity at Barnston includes two Roman coins, one dating to the 300s AD. One of the coins (not depicted here) is inscribed 'GLORIA ROMANO-RVM'.

A brick and tile works adjacent to Barnston Road is marked on the 1847 Ordnance Survey map, first edition.
