painting of windmill on hill

Bidston Hill signal station (1763) and lighthouse (1771, rebuilt 1873) assisted navigation around the coast. Signals were sent along a line of over 100 flagpoles along the ridge of the hill.

The first windmill on Bidston Hill is thought to date to the 1790s. A characteristic x-shaped depression in the land immediately to the north of the surviving windmill marks the site of a former wooden structure.
