PLACENAME: Birkedale (first mentioned around 1200). 'Birch valley'.
The Royal Birkdale Golf Club was formed in 1889, and moved to its present site at Birkdale Hills in 1894. The present clubhouse was built in 1935. Photograph courtesy of Alan C Birch. The cottage, Liverpool Road, is a Post Medieval timber framed building (listed Grade II*). A Neolithic/Bronze Age inhumation was found in 1883. It was donated to the Royal College of Surgeons. |
