PLACENAME: Boltelai (first mentioned 1086 in the Domesday Book). A dwelling house. From Old English 'bōtl'. Botle 1212; Botel 1284; Bothull 1332.
A mill and associated mill dam are recorded on maps and plans in the 1800s. This map extract, dated 1798, shows the mill and dam near Irlam Road, as well as Brook, Bootle Hall Estate, Mill Marsh, Mill Park, Bowling Green, Landmark, Landmark Marsh, Roastmeat, canal and Merton Road. Derby Park (opened 1895) is formed from land given to the people of Bootle by Lord Derby. It is on the English Heritage Register of Parks and Gardens. In 1907 'curiously-shaped signal posts for the guidance of ships entering the Mersey' are mentioned in historic documents. |
