Bromborough

PLACENAME: Brunburg (first mentioned 1100-35). Bruna's stronghold. From Old English personal name Bruna, with 'burh' meaning fortress, Bruna's fortress. Bronbur 1153; Bromborough 1277; Brumburg 1280.

Bromborough Cross (10th century) stood on the short road called The Cross. Only fragments survive, which were re-erected in 1958 by the Bromborough Society.

Medieval activity was evidenced in excavation at Cowpasture Wood, around one kilometre from the centre of the village.
