Calderstones

PLACENAME: From the Welsh word 'caled' meaning rocky stream, hard/violent, rapid. The second part of the name 'stones' originates from the stone remains of a late neolithic chambered tomb.

Mendips is a semi-detached suburban house in Menlove Avenue. John Lennon spent his childhood years there (1945 to 1963) with his Aunt Mimi and her husband George.

Calderstones late neolithic (new stone age) chambered tomb was originally located at the junction of Druids Cross Lane and Menlove Avenue, although now positioned in Harthill Greenhouses in the Calderstones Park.

The carved stone markings on the stone are similar to ones found in Anglesey and Ireland. This suggests links around the Irish Sea.
