Dovecot

PLACENAME: Dovecoat House is recorded in 1710. The name indicates that this area was once used for keeping doves.

Dovecot Farm and Westfield House are recorded in Post Medieval documents. They were probably the farms for the area.

Early industry in the area is exemplified by Charnock's Row, Mill Yard, to the west of the settlement core. It is thought to have been late 18th century, and is marked on the first edition six inch Ordnance Survey map.

Dovecot House and ancillary buildings such as an ice house were built in 1829. Althopugh the house has been demolished, the associated lodge is still standing.
