Eccleston

PLACENAME: Ecclistona (first mentioned 1190). Settlement around a church. From Latin ecclesia and Old English tun. Eccliston (1220); Accliston (1243); Ecleston (1246).

Eccleston Hall (1834) now forms part of a hospital. The earliest record of a hall on the site is 1374, and that building was replaced in 1567. By 1666 it was a large building with fifteen hearths. The current building is of red sandstone.
