PLACENAME: Fornebei (first mentioned 1086 in the Domesday Book). The old farmstead, from Old Norse forn býr; alternatively Forni's farmstead, from Old Norse personal name.

An 18th century lighthouse is recorded in Formby. Nicholas Blundell noted in his diary on 17 September 1719 that he and his wife rode out to see this landmark being built at the Grange.
