PLACENAME: The township was originally named Calders. It was a grange or grain store of Basingwerk Abbey.
Grange Hall (17th century) was demolished in 1830, and a farmhouse built on the site. Medieval field divisions are still evident in aerial photos. They are long ridges and furrows forming strips of land which were farmed.
The war memorial (1920s) on Grange Hill. This was the first large commission for sculptor Charles Sargeant Jagger, who later designed the Royal Artillery Memorial at Hyde Park Corner in London. Inscribed "At the call of king and country they left all that was dear to them, endured hardness, faced danger and finally passed out of sight of men by the path of duty and self sacrifice, giving up their own lives that others might live in freedom."
