PLACENAME: Hildeburgheye (1388). Hildeberg's island. From Old English personal name Hildeburg, it may have been that the monastery on the island was dedicated to St Hildeburgh. Hilburghee 1521; Hilbree 1538; Elborough 1891.

A flint-working site at Hilbre Point suggests Mesolithic use of Hilbre Island. Two tanged and barbed arrowheads have also been discovered.

Third or fourth century Roman pottery sherds were found during excavations on the island.
