PLACENAME: Knotty Ash is marked on the first edition 6 inch Ordnance Survey map (1851). The name may refer to a gnarled ash tree that grew at the top of Thomas Lane in an open area of land (first mentioned around 1700).
A socketed metal axe head (Bronze Age) was found close to the historic core on Thomas Lane during road construction works in 1906.
The Turk's Head (17th century) was a coaching inn on East Prescot Road. It was demolished in 1959. Prescot Road was a turnpike road, established in 1726. Tolls were charged for travelling along the road. Coaching inns along the turnpike roads provided accommodation for people travelling long distances. Image courtesy of Liverpool Record Office.
