PLACENAME: Chenulueslei (first mentioned 1086 in the Domesday Book). From Old English personal name Cenulfes and leah, meaning meadow field. Alternatively Old English cnoll, meaning hillock. Cnueleu (1189), Knuvesle (1199), Knouwesley (1246).
Knowsley Hall replaced a 13th century castle on the site. The current hall is 16th century and sits within a landscaped park, which is now used as a safari park.
