PLACENAME: Leiate (first mentioned 1086 in the Domesday Book). Swing-gate. From Old English hildgeat. Liddigate 1202; Lydiate 1225.

The earliest sections of Lydiate Hall were constructed in the 16th century. The building has not been occupied since the early 20th century. The site has been excavated and evidence of life in the hall, such as this hearth has been revealed.
