Moreton

PLACENAME: Moreton (first mentioned 1278). Town by a moor or fen. Farm at a marsh. From mör tün. Mortona 1287; Murton 1321; Moorton 1377.

Moreton Chapel (Medieval) stood in the plot of land bordered by Hoylake Road, Digg Lane and Netherton Road. It is thought to have been demolished c1690.

A windmill (Post Medieval) that stood to the north of the settlement core was recorded as a fieldname on the 1838 Tithe map.

Anglo Saxon coin

Archaeological finds in the area include a Neolithic polished axe with faceted sides found in the vicinity of Upton Road. Moreton.

This rare Anglo Saxon silver penny minted in south west England was found in Moreton in 1987.
