PLACENAME: Uluentune (first mentioned 1086 in the Domesday Book). Wulfa's enclosure. From Old Scandinavian personal name Wulfa and tün. The place seems to have been divided into two settlements as early as c1190, when Little Woolton was recorded as Parua Wolton.
Woolton Hall (Post Medieval) was constructed in 1704 but this structure may have been a remodelling of a 16th century building (listed Grade I). Image courtesy of Liverpool Record Office.
The Woolton Picture House, Liverpool's oldest remaining independent cinema, opened on Boxing Day 1927. In 2006 it was under threat of permanent closure but was saved following a local campaign and reopened on 22 March 2007. This December the cinema celebrates its 80th anniversary.
The earliest evidence of settlement in the area is the Iron Age hill fort at Camp Hill, which lies south of the current village. Back to the top | Back up to South Liverpool | Back up to Merseyside |
