Rainhill

PLACENAME: Reynhull (first mentioned 1246). Regna’s Hill or the hill where there is a boundary strip. From Old Norse ‘reinn’ and Old English hyll or Old English personal name Regna and hyll. Raynull (1258), Raynhull (1285), Raynhill (1400).

Woods House Farm (1664) was a sandstone and brick building with stone windows with vertical mullions. It was demolished in the 1980s.

railway station

In October 1829 the directors of the soon to be completed Liverpool and Manchester Railway held a competition at Rainhill to find the most appropriate locomotive to use on their railway. Robert Stephenson's Rocket won the competition, which became known as the Rainhill Trials.
