PLACENAME: Pulton cun le Spitell (first mentioned 1385). Hospital at town or Farm by a pool. From spitel pöl tün. A Medieval castle was originally on the site of Poulton Hall (1653). Poulton Hall is an L-shaped rendered stone house, much altered but retaining early features like a 17th century staircase (listed Grade II).
Clatterbridge Hospital (1836, expanded 1883-5) was established as a workhouse by the Wirral Union. The original building still stands as part of the hospital complex, dated 1837. Back to the top | Back up to East Wirral | Back up to Merseyside |
