PLACENAME: Tarboc (first mentioned 1086 in the Domesday Book). Thorn brook. From Old English thorn broc. Thorboc 1242; Torbroke 1311; Thornebrooke 1232-56.
A circular Roman enclosure has been excavated at Ochre Brook. This site has revealed evidence of a long period of settlement, including the roof tile shown here, which has a stamp for the Roman army's 20th legion. A windmill is mentioned in documents of the 13th century, and one is recorded as still being in operation in 1798.
