PLACENAME: Walea (first mentioned 1086 in the Domesday Book). Island of the Welsh or Britons. Known during the Medieval period as Kirkby Waley. Walleye 1259; Walezey 1534; Wallowsy 1721.

St Hilary's Church tower (13th century) in the churchyard of St Hilary's Church. The tower remains from a demolished church. It has been altered - the windows of the upper levels are dated to the 16th century (listed Grade II). The curvilinear churchyard suggests a possible early church.
