PLACENAME: Derbei (first mentioned 1086 in the Domesday Book). Farmstead where deer are seen. From Old Scandinavian diurby. It is possible that west was added to the name to distinguish it from the hundred of Derbyshire. Derbeia 1153.
The Court House (1662) has recently been restored under the Buildings At Risk programme.
The Medieval castle was a typical motte and bailey building. The wooden remains of the drawbridge were discovered when the site was excavated in 1927. Finds include Medieval pottery, leather, a red deer antler and iron nails. There is some evidence of Roman activity in the West Derby area, including Romano British pottery discovered during an excavation at Meadow Lane.
