PLACENAME: West Kirby: Cherchebia (first mentioned 1081). Village with a Church. From Old Norse Kirkju-byr. Prefix West- used to distinguish it from Kirkby in Wallia, now called Wallasey. Kyrkeby 1137; Westkyrby 1287.
St Bridget's Church (1869) on the site of the original church. The porch was added in 1876. Some 14th century masonry survives (listed Grade II). The first church (c900) was situated within a curvelinear churchyard.
Grange Mill windmill replaced an earlier timber peg mill. It is recorded in fieldnames and a millstone remains in the settlement. A beacon was set up on the site of the mill by the trustees of Liverpool Docks in 1841 as a guide for mariners in the Liverpool Bay area. West Kirby column now stands there. Photograph of West Kirby column © Mark Salisbury. A Neolithic tanged and barbed flint arrowhead that was discovered is now in the Grosvenor Museum in Chester.
