PLACENAME: Odecerce (first mentioned 1096). Church in a wood or a wooden church. May derive from Scandinavian kirkja. Hwodekerk c1240; Wodekirke c1250; Wodchurche 1511.
Holy Cross Church (12th century building with later additions) has a curvelinear church yard, indicative of early origins for the church. The present church is a rebuild of at least one earlier one. It is likely that any earlier church structure would have been built of wood, as indicated by the place name.
The Arrowe Park Hotel (early 20th century) was built on the site of the former Horse and Jockey Inn. Minature bronze cauldron has been found in the area (thought to be Roman). Back to the top | Back up to North Wirral | Back up to Merseyside |
