  Maritime

  Until the 1970s the streets behind Liverpool's South Docks were the heart of a busy seaport city. The recollections in this section give glimpses into the many small businesses and industries that were directly connected with the maritime life of the city - most of which are no longer there.

  Shopping and leisure

  The thriving port supported a huge number of bars, cafes, boarding houses and shops in the area. In this section the people who lived and worked in the area reminisce about where they spent their time off.

  Work

  Before the recessions of the 1970s and 1980s many people worked on the Liverpool waterfront, either on the docks or in other connected industries. These are just a selection of their memories.

  Landmarks

  Liverpool grew dramatically from a small settlement with just seven streets to a major port. At the height of its wealth many great buildings, grand streets and other landmarks were built, while less famous places became important to their local communities. Many of these remain while others, like the Overhead Railway, now exist only in memory.
