It used to cater for seamen, obviously, who used to be ashore here and it was almost like a Seaman’s Mission. You used to get quite a lot of fellas who’d get drunk and who’d been away to sea for years and years and they’d bunk in there as well, so it almost acted as a mid-way home between the seamen and a hostel, for down and outs. They used to have steps (acts out the motion), terraced steps and you’d always see lads having a drink out of a bottle or something like that early in a morning.
